BACKGROUND:  Due to major health concerns, my recent change to a vegan diet was immediate and drastic. I’d never even considered becoming a vegan, which made the transition all the more arduous. I didn’t know where to start. I stopped eating animal products but I wasn’t adding anything to my diet either. To help guide my through this process, a friend suggested I contact Carrie Holly-Hurt who is an Integrated Nutritional Health Coach.

Initially, I thought I’d only be learning about how to eat a healthy vegan diet and be given some recipes and resources, but I quickly discovered that Carrie’s expertise was seeing the interconnectedness of my diet to my physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Carrie was instrumental in guiding me through nutritional information that went well beyond my initial health concern and addressed chronic physical health problems that I have suffered from for over 25 years.

In addition to dietary advice, Carrie was very astute in her assessment of mental and spiritual issues impacting my physical health. Many of these issues had become so ingrained into my psyche that I was unaware of them. Through discussing my health in a holistic way, these issues rose to the surface, naturally on their own. At this point, Carrie was able to help me develop simple yet effective coping strategies, which improved my overall health and helped begin the process of freeing my life from the stress created by these problems.   

PROFESSIONALISM:  I had never worked with a Holistic Health Coach before, and wasn’t sure what to expect. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.  My experience working with Carrie was about as different as different can be from working with “mainstream” medicine. With Carrie, a partnership of mutual respect was formed, with the objective of creating goals that were unique to my nutritional, physical, and mental well-being.

One of the most helpful exercises that Carrie had me pursue was setting both short and long-term goals, and elucidating realistic steps to achieve those goals. I had to evaluate my health / life goals and determine the best course of action; Carrie was there every step of the way to help me achieve my goals and added insightful advice. Between appointments, Carrie always suggested activities I could use to work toward my goals. Her suggestions were always manageable with a realistic expectation of being accomplished.

Carrie diligently followed up on my progress. In a very kind and concerned way, Carrie held me accountable and responsible for achieving my goals. This is exactly what I needed to help me focus my energies on my health concerns. Accountability also helped me prepare for my appointments. Before each appointment I had to determine why I did or did not accomplish a certain goal, and if I needed to reevaluate my goals given any changes in priorities.    

SUMMARY:  I started my sessions thinking I was just going to get advice on how to eat like a vegan.  Through the examination of my goals, Carrie helped me realize that my diet was just one component to living a healthy life. As the needs of my physical and mental well-being unfolded, Carrie always offered constructive coping skills to manage them; coping skills that will benefit me the rest of my life. Depending on my need, Carrie provided practical resources, whether they be recipes or information about a particular health problem, that helped me make informed decisions about my life. The most far-reaching impact my appointments with Carrie have had has been teaching me life and coping skills that I should have learned years ago. Carrie has equipped me the coping skills I’ll need when faced with adversity in the future, but knowing I have those skills is a great comfort. This has definitely been a positive, life-altering experience.

Carrie is very good at what she does because she truly wants to help people be healthy and happy. Her commitment to her clients  is evident in the compassion she exhibits while still being a commensurate professional.
